Try Sumo at the CJCC Workshop Oct 25 & Beginner Competition Nov 7

The Hamilton Sumo Club is bringing Japan’s oldest sport to the CJCC this fall, with two events open to the whole community — and you don’t need any experience to take part.

Sumo Fundamental Workshop — Sunday, October 25, 10 AM–1 PM

A friendly, hands-on introduction to sumo for complete beginners and experienced grapplers alike. We’ll cover the fundamentals — stance, grips, balance, and how a match works — in three relaxed hours. No special gear required.
Cost: $25 (CJCC members attend free, ages 14 and up)
To register: Email contact@hamiltonsumoclub.com, or simply show up on the day.

Hammertown Sumo Throwdown — Saturday, November 7

A fun, beginner-friendly sumo competition where first-timers are the whole point. Come compete, or cheer from ringside. Expect weight-based divisions, a youth demonstration, and refreshments on site.
Admission: Free to watch — donations welcome at the door.

Athletes arrive at 9:00 am / Matches begin at 11:00 am

To compete: Register in advance at smoothcomp.com/en/event/35467.

Both events take place at the Canadian Japanese Cultural Centre,

45 Hempstead Drive, Hamilton.

Come learn at the workshop, then put it to use at the Throwdown.
